The largest nesting colonies are...I think...on 24 islands just off the
coast...and mainland colonies have been declining due, from what I read,
to loss of nesting cover.
This is correct, but the mainland colonies at Boulders Beach in Simonstown
and Betty's Bay (both of which I have visited) are of fairly recent origin
(the Boulders Beach colony is in an urban area and spread is limited in
part by neighbours who don't want the birds in their back gardens; it
contains some 2600 birds).
