Varanids of the family varanidae, are one of the most active groups of lizards. They occupy large home ranges, actively pursue prey, live in social groups and maintain high metabolic activities. For all of these reasons, it is not hard to believe that varanids have been compared to birds and mammals when it came to activity patterns and it is rightly so. Metabolic studies have shown that varanids are capable of sustained aerobic activity (Bennet a,b).

Below is the varanid species list. Varanids only fall under one genus (possibly two) called: Varanus, but this does not at all limit their variability. So head below for each species you would like to learn more about.
