If my grandfather was a carpenter and made a table, would I expect to
be still receiving an income from that table now?

Not so.  Plenty of my own code from 20 years ago is still in use.
Most of the code that implements the protocols on which the Internet
is build dates back to the 70s.  Many businesses still use systems
developed in the 60s or even 50s.  Despite predictions of its
emphemarality, experience shows that much code is surprisingly
enduring.

In any case: are you seriously arguing that the copyright term should
be longer for paintings than for other copyrightable works?
