Is there anything to suggest that one sex over another would have more
of a role in starting an evolutionary change within a species? In
other words, would males be more likely to "start" the process of
evolutionary change, or would females be that catalyst to begin the
process?

Please explain what you mean. What does it mean to start the process of evolutionary change? There's mutation, selection, and drift... ~:-|


I would suspect that things like major ecosystem changes would cause
both sexes to evolve equally, due to their need to survive, but what
about the gradual changes within species???

Are you talking about sexual selection?
