As Luis Rey and others have pointed out, Burian's
mammals and prehistoric man paintings have fared the
best - having seen a bunch of his paintings of these
subjects for the first time recently on that fabulous
website that has about 300 of them on display, I held
my breath in awe.
His dinosaurs are anatomically incorrect (scientific
ignorance of the time, not any fault on Burian's part)
but still beautiful in their own way.
Personally I think that Burian's paintings in the
1950s-1970s fired the imagination of young dinosaur
lovers the world over. There are many, many talented
paleo-artists around today - and I would bet that more
than a few would credit Burian's paintings as being one
of their early inspirations. The sense of otherworldly
mystery that seeps from his paintings is hypnotic.
Before Burian I hardly knew what dinosaurs were...after
seeing his paintings in the late 1960s I became a
life-long dino-phile.
...which leaves us with my original question: is there
anyone out here on the DML who knows Czech and can help
us in translating that page from the Burian Museum that
Dan Varner linked last week (or at least some of
Burian's quotes)?
