Fwd: scrunched a bit, indeed
Forwarded from Kent Stevens:
<< Hi Dan
Please forward to Bruce Wollatt (and others) the following:
There is indeed a problem with the postorbital region of the skull in the
dataset that was provided for me to include in the DinoMorph model. The skull
was provided as a single (Alias Wavefront 'obj' format) file, as a unit. I was
very grateful for the effort, and it was an improvement over an earlier scan
made of a commercial model. But the modeled cranium, assembled using CAD
software from CT scans of the individual cranial elements of the original
specimen, was fitted together with some distortion in the postorbital region,
as
you correctly note. On my request to the supplier, the skull data set went
through some revision, yet some inaccuracies indeed remain. But since I was
working on postcranial issues for the BHIGR "100 Years of Tyrannosaurus rex"
symposium and the subsequent Burpee symposium, I was grateful for the donation
of the skull subassembly, despite the residual distortion.
When I get access to a better assemble for the cranium I will happily
replace this element. Note that, unlike the pelvic assembly, the skull
assembly is
represented by a single element, not by a spatial collection of component
cranial bones. DinoMorph just imports a file representing the skull and
another file representing the mandible.
I will have access to another skull reconstruction in which the same
individual data files are fitted together more accurately, and as soon as that
is
available, I will swap out the scrunched skull.
Sincerely,
Kent >>

Hello all;
I'm wondering about the current batch of T.rex images on DinoMorph, said to
have been derived from scans of BHI's "Stan". Somehow the rear part of the
skull, from the orbits back, seems to be too small. It does not match other
images I've seen of Stan's actual skull. Am I imagining this or am I on to
something?
