In most or probably all cases, *Ichthyosaurus* itself is the original genus.
*I.* was at first a wastebasket genus, like *Megalosaurus*.

Was described as *I. quadriscissus*, and is now the type species of *S.*.
(At least that's what I think based on a museum specimen here in Vienna that
bears both labels.) A very similar situation to *Dilophosaurus*.

Most German ichthyosaurs (such as *S. q.*) come from the Liassic oil shales
of Holzmaden.
