J. Reid Macdonald
I'm passing along this post from Carrie Herbel on the vrtpaleo list. Reid was
a member of that generation of paleontologists whose career was put on hold
during the second world war where he served with distinction in the Pacific
Theater. He was also curator at the Los Angeles County Museum during the days
they were collecting their Hell Creek dinosaurs. He was paleo's grand old man
out
in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He is famous for honoring the local
native americans by using Lakota for naming his discoveries, Ekgmowechashala
being
one. He always had time and advice for students and I'll miss him. DV
<< Dear Vertebrate Paleontology Community:
It is with great sadness that I am reporting the passing of James Reid
Macdonald. He passed away on February 4th due to various health
complications. He was 86 years old and had retired in the Rapid City area.
His wife, Marylee, is saddened but relieved that he is finally out of pain.
He is best remembered for his research in the Sharps Fm, particularly around
the Wounded Knee area of South Dakota. He will have a full military funeral
at the National Cemetary near Sturgis, SD, on Monday, February 9th at 10
a.m.
