Re: People of color at SVP

Well, I wouldn't expect too many people looking for a job in ZOOLOGY. It's the
general "life-sciences" thing I was talking about...

I work as a biologist for the NC dept. of transportation doing wetland, and
endangered species surveys, stream surveys, and all kinds of water
quality/permitting things. when they have to put up a bridge/road/interstate,
they need to know how it's gong to affect the environment, water quality,
downstream resourses, animals and plants--as well as(and most importantly)
people. There's quite a bit of openings for this sort of work, and there's a
lot of need for it as well. Not JUST zoologists. There's a lot of botanists,
forestry people, entemologists. Basically, a ton of openings for any
life-science graduate.

One of the reasons I think this is troubling, is that most people going to
medical school major in the life sciences, zoology in particular, in order to
get a good background on anatomy, body systems, metabolic processes,
embryology, developmental anatomy, and histology. Many doctors and
dentists(and nearly ALL vets)are zoology majors. The payscale for doctors
should be high enough to attract anyone who can handle the coursework.
