Re: SVP on the Mississippi

From: MKIRKALDY@aol.com

Since folks are a little slow in recounting their experiences last week at SVP in St. Paul,

I'm know I'm still recuperating, but I'll give my take on the experience...

I was an SVP virgin, until I finally attended this year's meeting. I went to the meeting naively expecting the talks and/or posters to be the most exciting part, but I was wrong. By far the best part was getting to meet and hang out with my paleoart idols, which I never would have expected. Having dinner and talking with the likes of Mike Skrepnick, Mark Hallett, Dave Peters, Todd Marshall, Gary Staab, Tracy Ford, Donna Braginetz, Greg Paul, Bill Stout, and Demetios Vital was an absolute blast. It was so nice to finally meet Judy Horan, Mary Kirkaldy, Andy Farke, Kris Kripchek, Pete Buchholz, Scott Hartman, Dr. Holtz, and so many more people from the DML, too, and put faces to names. Speaking of which, I should have some pictures uploaded to the Internet within the next few days, assumning the photos turned out.

I agree with Mary that some of the posters would have made better presentations, but alas, that's life. Though it was nice to be able to approach Mauricio Anton on the poster room floor, rather than having to pull him aside after a talk. And howabout that chasmosaur-like centrosaurine, eh? Weird, man. Where did they have that sucker fall out, again? As the sister taxon to all other centrosaurines or something? I'll have to read the abstract again.

The exhibit room was REALLY cool, too. I found myself going back there everytime I had nowhere else to go. I was especially strangely attracted to Cliff Green's booth. Must've either been the Chasmosaurus sculpture I had my eye on or the friendliness of both Cliff and his wife Eileen. Thanks again for the sculpture, Cliff. It's now sitting on my desk, inspiring me.

Well, I'll cut myself off here, but I'm sure I'll have more to say when (if) I get my photos up. Just one last congrats to Andy Farke for outbidding Dr. Sues himself on the Spongebob Squarepants slippers!
