major new book postscript
In my quick typing, I inadvertently overlooked making it clear B. Glassey is Barbara Glassey.
She and Scott Forbes have a recent paper: 2002. Muting individual nestlings reduces parental foraging for the brood, Animal Behaviour 63(4):779-786, which gives a workable framework for those who, long after midnight when Ray Bradbury's October Country is quiet except for the winds from Skull Island rustling leaves in Halloween trees (sorry, I couldn't resist the analogies), wonder what the brooding strategies were for Compsognathus.
