So did they track prey? Use it for nocturnal attacks? (i'm sort of partial to the idea of nocturnal tyrannosaurs- hunting at night might help explain how on earth a T. rex could get within a half mile of a duckbill without getting seen).

How close it could get during the day depends on how thick the forest is, IMHO. Of course, in a dense forest a good sense of smell is certainly an advantage for a predator.
 
BTW, the olfactory lobes of Carcharodontosaurus are not so inflated (there's another paper in Mesozoic Vertebrate Life on its skull endocast).
