Penguin-like indeed: the Great Auk was the ORIGINAL "penguin" (Breton Celtic 
for "white head") and the term was subsequently applied to the southern 
hemisphere birds when they were encountered by European explorers, etc.  And 
since the Great Auk has been extinct since 1844 or so, most people have 
forgotten that we once DID have penguins up north.
