Fossil Sites Near San Diego

Hey,
I will be in San Diego later this month for a symposium (relating to my work on
Pennsylvanian ecosystems...nothing important :-)) I have one free afternoon
and I would like to spend my time hitting some of the local fossil sites. I am
very interested in hearing suggestions from the list.

Other than the San Diego Natural History Museum, what other must-see stops are
located within, say, 15 miles of San Diego? I'm interested in museums and
such, but I am especially interested in roadcuts and outcrops. Does anyone
know of specific localities that are easy and legal to visit? I know that
there are some decent Cretaceous exposures (such as where the Carlsbad
ankylosaur was found) and some nice Tertiary units (the Pliocene San Diego
Formation). Are there any other important formations that I should concentrate
on? Are there any specific sites that should yield a visit?

Also, what are the fossil collecting laws of California? I doubt I will
collect anything, but I would just like to be safe. Please respond off-list,
unless your answer merits a list discussion.

Regards,
Steve
