Ears

I was asked a very simple question, and I couldn't give the answer. How do
we know what shape were "visible" or "outside" ears of extinct animals and
especially, that mammals had them and dinosaurs had not?

I mumbled something about comparison to modern mammals and reptiles but I
myself was not convinced.

Can somebody answer?
