Recently on the vertpaleo there was a discussion as to venacular terms for
what used to be called "mammal-like reptiles". Some proposals were
"protomammals" and "paramammals". "Mammal relatives" is also not bad. And
you might as well use "non-mammalian synapsid" if you want to be
completely unambiguous.
