Re: Solnhofen redux
Hi there,
Solnhofen is approx. 80 km south of Nuremberg. Nearest "bigger" town is
Eichstätt (Eichstaett if your computer has no German symbols), about 20
km to the east. There are plenty of quarries between Eichstätt and
Solnhofen, some are reserved just for tourists. For a good start go to
Eichstätt (close to the Autobahn A9 (connecting Munich and Nuremberg)
and visit the Juramuseum in the Willibaldsburg (by far the best of the
local natural history museums with a lot of impressive specimens!).
Their Web site is: http://www.juramuseum.de
You might inquire there for a good site to dig.
Have fun and good luck!
Oliver
PS: If you want to look for fossils in the area, go for the Moernsheim
Beds (on top of the "real" plattenkalk) - there are much more fossils in
this formation and you will be surely lucky enough to find something
like a small fish or plant remains.
In the Solnhofen platy limestone you will probably find just lots of the
small planctonic crinoids >Saccocoma< - and nothing else...
