I think somebody's trying that.  They want to get some intact mammoth sperm and
impregnate an elephant, get a girl baby, impregnate that baby with more mammoth
sperm, and so on until they have an almost pureblood mammoth.  Aside from the 
fact
that the result would be _really_ inbred, I think their trouble is that DNA has 
a
really bad shelf-life if it's just left out.  All of the cloning people are 
talking
about now, can only be done with DNA either gathered from a live animal or 
taken from
samples frozen in liquid nitrogen.
