Dinosaur Genera List corrections #90

When it rains, it pours. Today's mail also brought a parcel, a few hours after
the arrival of the current issue of _Science_, that contained _Journal of
Vertebrate Paleontology 18_(1), also dated April 10, 1998. Bundled with the
issue was the fourth in the series of SVP Memoirs, this one a humongous
hardbound tome on amiid fishes. This Memoir is a truly monumental work,
representing about 18 years of labor by the authors (according to one of the
prefaces), and it will surely become a classic in the field of
paleoichthyology. I know nothing about paleofishes, but the package is simply
outstanding. I only wish there were a volume of equivalent scope on each of
the dinosaur groups!

The JVP issue includes several dinosaur articles, among which is a preliminary
description of the genus _Megaraptor_. This necessitates another update to the
Dinosaur Genera List, since _Megaraptor_ is no longer a _nomen nudum_ and has
a proper author and date. The entry should be changed to:

Megaraptor Novas, 1998

There is no change to the genera count.

Here are the dinosaur articles:

Novas, F. E., 1998. "_Megaraptor namunhuaiquii_, gen. et sp. nov., a large-
clawed, Late Cretaceous theropod from Patagonia," _Journal of Vertebrate
Paleontology 18_(1): 4-9 [April 10, 1998].

Chure, D. J. & Madsen, J. H., 1998. "An unusual braincase (?_Stokesosaurus
clevelandi_) from the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, Utah (Morrison
Formation; Late Jurassic)," _Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology 18_(1):
115-125 [April 10, 1998].

Smith, D. K., 1998. "A morphometric analysis of _Allosaurus_," _Journal of
Vertebrate Paleontology 18_(1): 126-142 [April 10, 1998].

[The above article sinks _Saurophaganax maximus_ into the genus _Allosaurus_
as the new species combination _Allosaurus maximus_.]

Mackovicky, P. J. & Currie, P. J., 1998. "The presence of a furcula in
tyrannosaurid theropods, and its phylogenetic and functional implications,"
_Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology 18_(1): 143-149 [April 10, 1998].

[Tyrannosaurid fans will want to peruse this one!]

Arcucci, A. & Marsicano, C. A., 1998. "A distinctive new archosaur from the
Middle Triassic (Los Chanares Formation) of Argentina," _Journal of Vertebrate
Paleontology 18_(1): 228-232 [April 10, 1998].

[Not a dinosaur paper, but introduces the new genus and species _Tarjadia
ruthae_, Archosauria _incertae sedis_, a heavily armored form possibly related
to phytosaurs, probably not to aetosaurs.]

Gabunia, L. K., Mchedlidze, G., Chkhikvadze, V. M. & Lucas, S. G., 1998.
"Jurassic sauropod dinosaur from the Republic of Georgia," _Journal of
Vertebrate Paleontology 18_(1): 233-236 [April 10, 1998].

[Not enough material to require a name: diplodocine caudal vertebra that
extends the range of that subfamily into central Asia.]

Also note reviews of Fastovsky & Weishampel's dino textbook by Lou Jacobs (p.
242), and Jane Davidson's book on Cope (_The Bone Sharp: The Life of Edward
Drinker Cope_, Acad. Nat. Sci. Phil.) by Kevin Padian (p. 243-246).
