A Science news story http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/09/new-find-clears-madagascar-s-first-settlers-wiping-out-world-s-largest-bird quotes Ian Tattersall as saying that it's possible the find represents only a small group of humans on the island who did not have a long-term impact. They don't have any stone tools dating back that far. With such a long gap between this find and the earliest other record of humans, it may be a fair question to ask if those early settlers may have died out relatively soon, like the Norse Greenlanders. -- Jeff Hecht
