Specimen of possible new species of theropod (allosaurid) set to be auctioned in France...
I'm not providing links to the news stories and videos in French because of the DML restrictions on mentioning commercial sales or auctions of fossils that are pending. However, I think this is important and can summarize some details about the specimen.
Said to be a previously unknown species of allosaurid that differs from Allosaurus as currently known in mainly details of the skull and teeth. Based on the videos, the teeth in the front of the lower jaw are apparently larger and longer than the teeth further back in the dentary bone, which also has a somewhat enlarged tip for the bigger teeth, whereas Allosaurus fragilis skulls typically would have more uniform teeth in the mandible, which tapers to the end.
The specimen is about 9 meters long, 70 percent complete, discovered in the Morrison Formation in Wyoming in the United States.
Apparently, bitcoin bids will be accepted, which sounds ominous for the fossil market that puts fossils into private hands away from science.
