A case of infection in an Aeolosaurini (Sauropoda) dinosaur from the Upper Cretaceous of SÃo Paulo, southeastern Brazil, and the impact on its life.
Cretaceous Research (advance online publication)
We document an osteomyelitis in a posterior caudal vertebra of a Aeolosaurini titanosaur dinosaur from the Upper Cretaceous of SÃo Paulo, in southeastern Brazil. Gross examination of the caudal vertebra revealed the presence of new bone formation with a woven bone surface texture, a characteristic feature of non-specific infection. This lesion was likely associated with inflammation of the m. caudofemoralis longus and it may have compromised the mobility of the animal. Although infections have been described in several extinct taxa, this is only the third case diagnosed in a sauropod dinosaur and the first in Brazil.
