I don't want to speak for Mick but I believe the femoral sprawl was kept well 
within the range for modern birds. The pose was deliberately flattened, placing 
most body parts within planes perpendicular to the line of sight, to allow 
direct comparison of linear measurements. In short, to minimize foreshortening 
of all pennaceous feathers.

We should all give a shout out to the maestro, Mick Ellison. He is the sensei.
