In Chinese, too, every genus and species name is translated/recreated.
Seildýr (Chordata)
Like TMK, I'm sure that dýr means "animals". The rest must then be a
translation of _chorda_... and indeed, _Seil_ means "rope" in German.
BTW, German-speaking hunters reportedly restrict _Tier_ to "adult female
red deer (*Cervus elaphus*)". That's particularly interesting because,
while they have lots and lots of technical terms that nobody else uses,
most of them are just poetic metaphors, for instance a hare's tail is
called "flower".
