Molecular studies suggest that varanids date back to at least the Early
Cretaceous. Telmasaurus
and Estesia fossils are known from Late Cretaceous Mongolian deposits (Estesia
may be closer to
gila monsters than 'true' varanids, making it more of a 'varanoid').
And of course there were the mosasaurs, which were really just big sea-going
cousins of the
monitors.
