As a considerable oversimplification, because many of the changes that
improve gliding ability (increased aspect ratio for example), also increase
the moment of inertia of the wings, making flapping more difficult for the
incipient flyer.

I But I sometimes read that the trends towards gliding are opposite to
these towards flapping flight; can somebody tell me why?
