It was pretty thick in 2002 when Leonardo was "announced" at the SVP press  
conference in Norman, OK, even though it had already been in the newspapers 
some  months before.  I don't know if there was a poster or a talk on specimen, 
 
but it was obvious that something was up.  After the press conference, Mr.  
Murphy was lining up artists to draw the creature, there were leaflets about 
the 
 upcoming book, and no one seemed to know anything about the Phillips County  
Museum/Judith River Institute.

At the meeting, I had the opportunity to ask one of the SVP paleos what he  
thought about "Leonardo".  He said it was an important specimen, but that  
there were some doubts that it was going to stay where it was.  Hmm. SVP  
played 
the chump in helping to showcase a specimen that was actually privately  owned 
(by Murphy and the Hammonds).  Not that there weren't  inquiries:
