Re: New name for Megalosaurus hesperis
Wow. Roger gave a talk about (among other things) its phylogenetic position
at the EAVP* congress in July, and had an SVP meeting poster about it, but
never mentioned he had a redescription in press... He did mention it's the
oldest certain tetanuran at present (Bajocian -- second of the four stages
of the Middle Jurassic).

Now that's just cruel.
the maxillary 'fenestra' is present but takes the form of an imperforate
fossa (a spinosauroid synapomorphy); and the paradental groove is wide
anteriorly, defining a distinct gap between the interdental plates and the
medial wall of the dentary (a synapomorphy of Spinosauridae +
Megalosauridae).
I'll post the SVP meeting abstract about the new phylogeny of Tetanurae
tomorrow.
