He wrote it in the margins of the Vestiges (1844), I believe, and then
continued to say just that for the rest of his professional life.

Could be a bit difficult. I think it's something he scribbled into a
book margin long before he published the Origin.
But anyway, I got that from Gould's book Full House (which I don't
have here, so I can't check it out).
