But that of course means that today's humans are as "high up" as every single bacterium in their lower intestines.
Given that the bacteria in our bodies outnumber our own cells (or so some
scientists have said), I'd say that humans are really nothing more than a
fancy form of bacterial transport. In which case the bacteria inside us are
the real masters!
