Re: smallest ANCIENT non-bird dinosaur - was what I was asking

Interesting. ("Unken" -- another great name. Onomatopoeic?)

Certainly. The sound they make can be approximated by trying hard to say "oo" while keeping your mouth closed.

(The best is *Pelobates*, though: KrÃtenfrosch -- toadfrog!)

I'm suddenly reminded that the phenomenon extends to other types of
technical term as well. Where English has "the Lower Cretaceous",
German has "die Unterkreide" -- "the underchalk".

(Also "untere Kreide".)

English did have "Upper" and "Lower Chalk" in the 19th century, but it seems they ended up being formation names rather than epoch names.
