Ah, the long-awaited McFadden paper! Prepub title was
"Revised age of the late Neogene terror bird (Titanis)
in North America during the Great American
Interchange". Published in "Geology".
Of course, what could one expect from "American
Carnivore"... a bit ludicrous the title though; when I
first glanced it, the thing that shot through my mind
was:
GARGANTUAVIS? YAY!
*That* was an early bird. Not American of course.
Possibly a carnivore, though likely not an active
hunter (though this is not resolved)
Regards,
Eike
PS: there is a GSA Special Paper in which
flightlessness and gigantism in Late Cretaceous avians
is discussed:
Giant ground birds at the Cretaceous-Tertiary
boundary: Extinction or survival? (doi:
10.1130/0-8137-2356-6(2002)356<303:GGBATT>2.0.CO;2)
Anyone read it? Is it any good? I'd love to read it,
but we only have access to the journals, not the Spec.Pub.
