    One point that might be confusing the issue - it used to be common
practice as late as the early 1900s to capitalise species names derived
from proper names and/or nouns in apposition (so you would see e.g.
_Iguanodon Mantelli_). As other people have already indicated, this
practice is no longer valid - species names are now never capitalised,
and if you encounter a capitalised species name in an old reference, the
capital should be converted to a small letter.
