My understanding is that the protostegids were dying out well before 
the K-T, with only one or two taxa surviving to (or near) the 
end.  It has been suggested that protostegids may have been ammonite 
specialists, and that their extinction was linked to the decline of 
ammonite diversity in the Cretaceous (and, of course, their eventual 
extinction).
