Without doing calculations, I expect that they would hit the water during
the first 20 or 30 stroke cycles or more. And since forces in the water
are about 800 times greater than in air, I'd expect the lower half of the
initial upstroke to be almost 30 times slower than usual. For northropi,
say at a guess, 6 or 8 seconds or thereabouts to clear the wings of the
water on the first upstroke, instead of the usual quarter second for the
lower half of the first upstroke.

Not only are the wings going to hit the water during the first stroke
cycle, but I would also expect that the launch would be very slow indeed
