If you think stratigraphically enough, "after" and "above" is the same...

Actually that's... the best translation is probably "at".

This is "on". Or "up". Or both.

That's rare (as is "on" -- "auf"). The normal word to use is "in(to)" 
("in")... wait, that might not be that common in northern Germany...

No, "bei" is only used for places, not for directions, and the only 
English phrase where it can be translated as "by" is "by my side".
