Motani has discussed this change in
ichthyosaur evolution from the "eel-like" ichthyopterygian *Utatsusaurus*
and
"basal" ichthyosaur *Cymbospondylus* to the more tail-powered *Grippia*,
shastasaurs and mixosaurs, and then the more "dolphin-like"
*Temnodontosaurus*
and ophthalmosaurs/stenopterygids.
I don't know what you mean here, but you don't mean *Grippia*, the
exceedingly basal Early Triassic beastie with phalanges that are still long
bones and the manual phalangeal formula of 5-6-6-5-4.
