highly recommend the following:

Weltkrieg" Roolf, Christoph 2004, Berichte zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte
27, p. 5 - 26.

This is the first detailed discussion of the efforts of
palaeontologist Otto Jaekel to restart excavation at the Bernissart
Iguanodon site between 1915 and 1918.  A new mine shaft was sunk, with
the intention of shipping any finds to museums in Berlin, and possibly
Hamburg and Munich.  Extensive research of archival sources has
yielded a fascinating glimpse into the efforts of German scientists in
occupied Belgium.
