Bahariasaurus
I have been contemplating a hypothesis (I heard parts of it somewhere
before, but am not sure where) regarding mainly Bahariasaurus and its
relationships to other predatory dinosaurs. Problem is, my available
information I have is not that great, so if anyone has some good pictures,
illustrations, etc, of any of the material in question I would appreciate
it. If you feel it is an unsound argument feel free to pick it apart. Here
is my hypothesis: I think Bahariasaurus was a basal tyrannosaur. A pelvis
that supposedly belongs to it seems to indicate tyrannosaur affinities.
Tyrannosaur premaxiliary teeth are known from India (they were previously
reffered to Indosuchus). How would a tyrannosaur, which are found mainly on
Laurasian continents, get into India which would have been isolated from the
rest of the world for some time? The answer would have to be that they
moves into India before it seperated from Africa and Madagascar. They could
have gotten into Africa from Europe. Bahariasaurus is in the right time and
place to be one of these African tyrannosaurs. A lot of the reffered
material of Bahariasaurus, however, has similarities to various other
Theropod groups. I beleive that much of this referred material does not
belong in Bahariasaurus but with other theropods, including Deltadromeus and
Carcharodontosaurus. I suspect there may be a relationship between
Bahariasaurus and Dryptosaurus and/or Alectrosaurus.
