Summary: Sauropod Measurement References
Last week, I posted a message requesting references for papers that
have precise sauropod measurements, and promised to summarise the
results to the list. Here is that summary.
Matt Wedel pointed me to the monographs describing some of the key
genera in detail:
Apatosaurus: Gilmore 1936
Diplodocus: Hatcher 1901
Haplocanthosaurus: Hatcher 1903
Camarasaurus: Osborn and Mook 1921, McIntosh et al. 1996a
(C. lewisi), McIntosh et al. 1996b (a specimen of
C. lentus that went to a Japanese museum)
Brachiosaurus: Janensch 1950, 1961
Euhelopus: Wiman 1929
Saltasaurus: Powell 1992, 2003
Alessandro Marisa not only sent me the references for four papers
giving measurements for various Camarasaurus specimens, but also went
far beyond the call of duty by attaching spreadsheets containing the
measurements. The references are as follows (some duplication with
those mentioned by Matt Wedel):
Osborn H.F. and Mook C.C. 1921 Camarasaurus,
Amphicoelias, and other sauropods of Cope. Memoirs of
the American Museum of Natural History n.s. III 3
pp:247-387 26pl.
McIntosh J.S., Miles C.A., Cloward K.C., and Parker
J.R. A new nearly complete skeleton of Camarasaurus.
Bulletin Gumna Museum of Natural History pp:1-32
Gilmore C.W. A nearly complete skeleton of
Camarasaurus, a saurischian dinosaur from the Dinosaur
Nantional Monument Utah. Memoirs of Carnegie Museum 10
pp:353-367 5pl.
McIntosh J.S., Miller W.E., Stadtman K.L. and Gillette
D.D. The osteology of Camarasaurus lewisi (Jensen,
1988) BYU Geology Studies 41 pp:73-116.
Greg Paul suggested:
Paul G 1998 Terramegathermy and Cope's Rule in the
land of titans. Modern Geology 23:179-217
Paul G 1988. The Brachiosaur giants of the Morrison
and Tendaguru.... Hunteria 2(3): 1-14.
(BTW., I have drawn a complete blank in my efforts to locate a copy of
the latter -- even the Library of Congress didn't have it! If any
kind soul would be prepared to send me a copy, please get in touch
off-list.)
And finally, the best source I've yet found for the particular
measurements I'm looking for (cervical vertebtra dimensions) is the
_Sauroposeidon_ paper, in which Table 4 is a gold-mine:
Wedel M.J., Cifelli, R.L. and Sanders, R.K. (2000)
Osteology, paleobiology, and relationships of the
sauropod dinosaur Sauroposeidon. Acta Palaeontologica
Polinica 45 (4)343-388
And, praise be, it's freely available on-line at
http://www.snomnh.ou.edu/pdf/2000/00-28.pdf
and highly recommended for sauropod-lovers everywhere! (That's all of
us, right? I mean _everyone_ loves sauropods.)
