News from Germany, 2nd try

Hello all,

after a longer absence from the list, I like to inform you from now on again
about the development in german dinosaur discoveries. First I had a longer
phone call with Dr. Lanser (you remember the man who worked on the german giant
theropod found some years ago).

Dr. Lanser told me that he has started working on a paper about the upper
Jurassic theropod together with paleontologist Rupert Wild from the museum of
natural history in Stuttgart (the procedure seems to take a longer time than in
the US - but I don't know what's the "normal" term between finding a fossil and
describing it in a scientifical paper...).

Lanser still thinks that the complete length of the theropod was probably about
14 meters (maybe a little too long as some of you already mentioned). For
Lanser it seems also to be a so far unknown species. As far as I understood it,
the work at the site near the city Minden is stopped since the end of 2001, so
it seems relatively unlikely that there will be new finds in the nearer future.

The original maxilla of the theropod is shown to the public at the moment as
part of an exhibition at the Bundeskunsthalle in Berlin. I found a photo of the
maxilla with its impressing teeth and try to connect it with this message (hope
it works... if yes please remember the copyright is to the Naturkundemuseum
Münster).

The real news (at least it was one for me) is that Lanser now works at a new
site in the Sauerland-region (east of the city Cologne). And he does with great
success!

There he found many remains of different dinosaur species: parts of
plant-eaters, teeth and claws of theropods, remains of crocodiles, turtles and
so on. Yesterday for example there was found a tooth of a pterodactyl spec. All
the fossils are lower cretaceous. I'll try to visit him at the site in the
nearer future. If I get some more news, you'll be the first to know.

So far that is all from here...

Great to be back again on the list,
Thomas
