Fw: Your post on examples of fossil theft and thievery
Dear Michael and List,
I went to the Tucson show as an art director for one of my client's
museum projects. Many of the dealers there, I felt, were fly by night. As
far as having the ability to see into thier souls and gage thier personal
righteousness, no I didn't. By the way, I didn't say that any one at the
show was breaking any laws. I believe that if a commercial person puts the
science first, then there isn't as big of a problem. My biggest concern is
fossil pirates that rape the dig sites looking for the most valuable
fossils. That is exactly what was done at the BLM site I worked at recently.
The state was able to confiscate the fossils, and prosecute the thieves
while legitamate paleontologists were able to work it.
That's one story. Here's another. I live 25 miles from the Cleveland
Loyd. It has been pilfured a number of times over the past few years on the
off season. The government. simply doesn't have the funding to hire 24 hour
guards at all of the dig sites, and fossil pirates know this, and take full
advantage of it. If you still think that fossil piracy is a minor concern,
and that my "stories," as you put it, are no better that your innuendos,
then please feel free to look up " fossil theft " on google search. I can
back up my words with facts.
I have lived in Utah for ten years now, and we have had one problem
after another with fossil theft, including the idiot that this thread was
started about. He also got busted for dinosaur fossil theft, here in Utah,
along with his moonrock escapades.
