AARDVARKS

There's only one species of aardvark (afaik), but to get to
the aardvark from its closest relative demands a few dozen
species as "missing links."

There are loads of species of fossil aardvark.
Incidentally, the extant species has been split into as many
as 18 and the existence of two extant species, _Orycteropus
afer_ and _O. capensis_, was supported by some workers as
recently as the 1950s.
