Another thing to think about is the lack of pelvis in modern whales. If I
remember correctly modern whales have only the tiniest vestiges of a pelvis
limited to a few shunts of bone along the sacral region of the vertebral
column. The size of the young is not limited by the need to pass through the
pelvis as it is in terrestrial animals.
