In a forum such as this, the word "bird" is meaningless.
I couldn't disagree with you more. "Bird" is just as valid a term as
dinosaur. Just as there was the first dinosaur, which gave rise to the rest
of its clade; so too was there the first bird, which gave rise to the rest
of its respective clade. It's just a matter of determining exactly what
that first bird might have been.
Besides, it's a helluva lot less confusing (annoying?) than refering to all
birds as extant dinosaurs/theropods.
