A lack of light=lack of photosynthesizing plankton, and that has devastating
effects on all the marine life. Without plankton, you lose the fish (and
ammonites?) adapted to eat them. Then you lose the animals designed to prey
on those animals, and soforth...you come through with patches that weren't
hit hard, where not everything dies out, scavengers (like sharks and their
like), and deep sea life, and that's your post-impact marine ecosystem. I'm
pretty amazed that anything survived in the ocean, actually.
