I wonder how well the online article reflects Carey's actual paper.  The
article's take on the whole "arboreal vs cursorial" thing is certainly
wrong-headed (the first birds had wing-claws just for climbing?; the
"cursorial" theory posits a *quadrupedal* ancestor???).  The basic premise
of proto-birds nesting in trees bears an uncanny similarity to a
little-known idea proposed by Palm four or five years ago.

Troodontids layed their eggs on islands in shallow lakes (maybe), and
protobirds placed their's in trees (according to Carey).  Carey's paper may
contain some interesting ideas, and I look forward to getting the whole
story (rather than a pop-sci digest).  Does anyone have the exact citation?
