Re: Dinosaurian Hyoid Apparatus
To the best of my recollection, splanchnocranial (sic?, "visceral") elements
have been described for _"Corythosaurus" casuarius_ (in Ostrom, 1961), and
_Protohadros byrdi_ (Head, 1998, including CbII!!!). They are present, but
undescribed, on a specimen of _Edmontosaurus regalis_ in the BMNH (illiustrated
by Norman in his Encyclopaedia of Dinosaurs, I believe), and I suspect they are
more prevalent than the literature would seem to indicate. We have some
isolated, robust hyoids from Big Bend that have raised questions, since the
only other known hadrobits from the same unit include very *reduced* hyoids
(the new species from my poster at SVP '01). Also, I don't think it'll be
published anytime soon, but I prepared a probable _Chasmosaurus mariscalensis_
dentary from a bonebed that preserved a rather modest CbI within the Meckelian
fossa (!).
