Why? There have certainly always been the warm equatorial currents, e. g.
the Equatorial Countercurrent, which flows from Indonesia straight to
Columbia and prevents the Humboldt Stream from reaching further north. (It
contains the 2 islands I mentioned yesterday, so there pretty certainly are
no penguins there.) It should have continued into the Gulf Stream before
Panama rose.
