I have conducted a somewhat similar field test with a highly motivated
African Elephant. A Landrover I was sitting in was chased by an angry
elephant mother on Mount Kenya because we had inadvertently come too
close to her calf. Initially she gained on the car and my impression is
that we were doing rather more than 12 mph at the time. Unfortunately I
didn't think to check the speedometer, being busy hanging on to the car
and trying to decide which way to jump if she caught up with us. An
angry African Elephant close up is rather impressive by the way.
